Kinetic Typography

Project 1

Text from The Art of Asking - Amanda Palmer

For most of human history, musicians, artists, they’ve been part of the community. Connectors and openers not untouchable stars. Celebrity is about a lot of people loving you from a distance, but the Internet and the content that we’re freely able to share on it are taking us back. It’s about a few people loving you up close and about those people being enough. So a lot of people are confused by the idea of no hard sticker price. They see it as an unpredictable risk, but the things I’ve done, the Kickstarter, the street, the doorbell, I don’t see these things as risk. I see them as trust.

Creative Brief

I chose to do an excerpt from a TEDx Talk by Amanda Palmer on the Art of Asking. I saw this video when it first came out about five years ago before I even decided that I wanted to do anything in the domain of art. I had always thought of Palmer’s ideas being able to apply to all walks of life, whether that be through art, engineering, or science. She emphasized the seriousness of a connection when you are doing any form of work, the asking and acknowledging of each other as a person and not just as another stranger in the audience. This specific portion of her speech reminded me of the essence of what I am trying to do through my TAM degree. I am trying to maintain a part of my community while accenting the beauty that we so often hide from. The internet allows for the connection that we so long have lost between those that surround us and allow us to bring and share our art with others. Taking the risk of sharing your art with others is what draws those connections, it is what allows for that trust between complete strangers, to see the commonalities between one another instead of the differences.

For designing the kinetic typography to go along with this speech, I want it to be flowing and accentuate specific words just as Palmer does with her speech. She is a very methodical talker so I want to make sure that each word (or phrase) is methodically placed with significance where need be. There are specific words and phrases that speak to me more than others and I want to provide more than just a single page to bring more attention to these phrases. The specific words and phrases I want to have stand out are, community, “a few people loving you up close”, “people are confused by the idea of no hard sticker price”, risk, and trust. I think the most difficult part of this project will be some of the animations I see in my mind that I would love to have happen in the actual project but have not learned the skills to develop them yet. Another difficult thing will be to not overdo how much design I wish to include in the project. If I have too much design it will take away from the impact of the words, however, if I have too little design, it won’t make her words impactful enough. Finding that even balance will be a challenge.
